Ready for Air by Kate Hopper, a Giveaway

book cover

Along with dark chocolate, GLEE, and fabulous mojitos, must-read books is one of my favorite topics to discuss.

Enter: Kate Hopper’s new memoir, Ready for Air.

A beautifully written narrative of Kate’s experiences with pre-term labor, preeclampsia, and the NICU all before she went through what we normally associate with new motherhood — late nights and big tears, pure exhaustion and inevitable love, this one needs to immediately go on your Books to Read list.

Kate drew me in with her words and her story, but it’s her passion that keeps me hooked. Kate believes that birth stories of all kinds need to be told, and heard, by women. So as her second book makes its way onto bookshelves and into hearts, Kate is offering three amazing experiences.

First, is a NICU giveaway. Book Tour guru Emily Hedges says, “Kate’s book is one that people want to share. When someone has a premature baby, you feel so helpless. It feels so good to offer something that would make a woman feel like she isn’t alone. If one in eight births are premature, we all know people who are going through this.” In that vein, Kate’s publisher, University of Minnesota Press, is donating 15 copies of Ready for Air to neonatal intensive care units in the U.S. and Canada. Kate is giving her readers the chance to recommend NICU units to donate to. Find out more information about this true work of heart here.

Second, is a book club visit. Kate wants to come to your book club — either virtually or in person. The power of memoir is that connects us, makes us feel less alone, and makes the new known, familiar, and necessary. Kate believes — and lives this — with all of her heart so she wants to connect with you over words — and perhaps a glass of wine. To enter the contest, all you need to do is e-mail with the subject line Ready for Air Book Club Contest and include a few sentences about why you’d like to have Kate visit your book club. Careful though, once you meet her, she’ll carve out a place in your heart and stay there.

And third, Kate is generously giving away one copy of Ready for Air to a reader! I reviewed Ready for Air on Everyday Family and quickly realized that it’s a must-read for all women. When Kate said, “I hope any mother can pick my book up and read it and know that birth stories are powerful, that her specific story is powerful. I hope that women will realize that their stories need to be told and listened to. Even hard ones,” I couldn’t help but nod in agreement and start telling anyone who would listen to read this book.

The details of the giveaway are below — good luck! To find out more about Kate, visit her blog Motherhood and Words,  follow her on Facebook and Twitter and, of course, buy Ready for Air. And for a taste of the beautiful words between the pages of this gorgeous book, you can listen to the first slice of it that I was honored to listen to here.
